Trasylol FAQs
What is Trasylol?
Trasylol (aprotinin injection) is an injectable drug used in many heart and other surgeries in order to stop excessive blood loss. The drug itself is a natural proteinase inhibitor obtained from bovine lung tissue.
Trasylol was approved by the FDA in 1993 for use in stopping blood loss. In recent years, Bayer AG, maker of Trasylol, has pushed for additional uses. In 2005 Trasylol sales were seen to be worth about $600 million to the company. Trasylol injections cost as much as $1000 per use, versus less than $20 for generic alternatives.
Why is Trasylol Dangerous?
In a study released in The New England Journal of Medicine, the administration of Trasylol was seen to increase the risk of serious injury and death in patients. Patients who received Trasylol had double the chance of developing kidney failure. Patients also had a greater chance of heart attacks, heart failure, and death than patients who had not been given the drug.
How do I know if I or someone I love has been given Trasylol?
Since Trasylol has been in use since 1993, it is a commonly given drug during surgery. Trasylol has especially been used in coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. Because post-surgical symptoms are often difficult to diagnose, it is suspected that several Trasylol related side effects were not noticed.

If Trasylol was in use for such a long time why did it take so long for its dangers to become known?
Studies on Trasylol never revealed these increases in risks to the patients. These studies were conducted by Bayer AG - the maker of the drug - however. The latest study was conducted independently by Dr. Dennis Mangano of the Ischemia Research and Education Foundation in San Bruno, California.
Mangano and his team have estimated that as many as 10,000 patients may be on dialysis because they were administered Trasylol in the past. The study concluded that if generic drugs were used instead it would save some $1 billion in healthcare costs and allow for a reduction in drug prices by $250 million.
If you or someone you know are currently on dialysis in Seattle, Tacoma, Bellingham or anywhere in Washington and believe it may have been due to Trasylol, contact our office immediately.
